The problem was the exposure to the sun and to the wind. The choice of a fixed roof structure was the best option to cover the dining area and protect it from the sun, but the structure had to be anchored very strongly to the existing masonry and carpentry to make it hurricane-proof. You can see in the second photo how we anchored it to the existing carpentry. On its under side, it is also anchored to the wall masonry, and to the deck itself with a column dug and cemented into the ground. This fixed roof structure enables the owners to entertain guests outside all year round. It is much stronger than retractable awnings.
