Smart Pergola Brewer Residence, St Petersburg FL – Construction Phases

In this short video, we show the construction phases of this smart pergola, atop the building called Brewer Residence in St Petersburg, FL.

This was a large project, with some construction challenges. The structure is protecting the patio at the top of the building, enabling the residents to come to the top floor and enjoy the marvelous view of the bay.

Beyond the challenge of hoisting very large metallic beams, the build also required a hurricane-proof anchoring of the beams, and full protection against the salt water constantly brought to the top of the building by the wind.

The louvered pergola offers light and micro-misting ports which enable residents to be in the shade and cooled off by micro-droplets of filtered water. The louvers are motorized, and they can be closed or oriented to let the sun in or out.

We just finished building this louvered pergola structure on the back of this lovely 1960s home, right on the intercoastal in Dunedin, FL. We finished building this smart louvered pergola in the back of this very nice home in Palm Harbor. The owners have a great view on the golf course, but can’t always enjoy it during the say because of the direct sun exposure. The owners selected the louvered system because a regular pergo does not allow the patio to be protected from harsh sun and rain. We just finished building this smart pergola structure. It features pivoting louvers that can be opened or closed, either to let the sun in or to protect from it. In the closed position, the louvers also protect from the rain. This is an elegant solution to extend the time you can spend outdoors with your family and guests. Note the presence of super-gutters on each side of the structure: they help channeling rainwater coming down the roof to the side and into the ground, rather than letting it flow over the louvers. Not only is it better for the louver mechanism, but it also avoid water, dirt, dust and leaves staying on top of the louvers with the risk of mildew growth and difficult clean-ups. This home is located on Vina Del Mar Island, at the southern tip of St Petersburg, FL. As you can see in the first photo, the house has a nice courtyard with a pool, and the patio space back of the pool deck and nearest the wall has been transformed into a dining area by the owners. The problem was the exposure to the sun and to the wind. The choice of a fixed roof structure was the best option to cover the dining area and protect it from the sun, but the structure had to be anchored very strongly to the existing masonry and carpentry to make it hurricane-proof. You can see in the second photo how we anchored it to the existing carpentry. On its under side, it is also anchored to the wall masonry, and to the deck itself with a column dug and cemented into the ground. This fixed roof structure enables the owners to entertain guests outside all year round. It is much stronger than retractable awnings. These cover plates are located at the center of the structure. They are waterproofed to ensure no rain falls on patrons in the sitting patio. the waterproofing also prevents debris (leaves, dust) to settle between the plates. The weather resistance of the whole structure is improved. That pergola adds money-generating sitting space to the restaurants sharing the covered patio.
